Summary

The Medical Technologist performs moderate complexity laboratory testing and analyzes patient specimens to provide accurate and timely diagnostic information for the detection, diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease.

Essential Functions

  • Perform laboratory testing and analysis in chemistry, hematology, immunoassay, and other assigned laboratory disciplines.
  • Receive, process, evaluate, and test patient specimens according to established laboratory procedures.
  • Review and verify test results for accuracy, completeness, and consistency prior to reporting.
  • Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, clean, and maintain laboratory instrumentation and equipment according to established procedures.
  • Perform and document quality control, proficiency testing, and quality assurance activities to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
  • Prepare reagents, controls, and other materials necessary for laboratory testing.
  • Prioritize and process routine, STAT, timed, and patient-waiting specimens while ensuring timely reporting of results.
  • Communicate critical laboratory values to providers and clinical staff in accordance with laboratory policy and document notifications appropriately.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of laboratory supplies and notify leadership of supply needs.
  • Assist the Laboratory Manager with laboratory operations, quality initiatives, and other assigned projects.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation in accordance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical information and support regarding laboratory testing and results to providers and clinical staff as appropriate.
  • Maintain compliance with CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, and other applicable laboratory regulations and standards.
  • Interact professionally with laboratory personnel, providers, and other healthcare team members.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Competencies

  • Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures, methodologies, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of laboratory regulations, quality standards, and safety requirements, including CLIA, OSHA, and HIPAA.
  • Ability to perform laboratory testing accurately and efficiently while maintaining quality standards.
  • Ability to operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instrumentation.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret test results and identify discrepancies requiring follow-up.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and manage routine, STAT, and timed testing requests.
  • Proficiency with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), Electronic Health Records (EHR), and basic computer applications.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with providers, laboratory staff, and other healthcare team members.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and establish professional working relationships.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, and stooping.
  • Frequent use of hands and fine motor skills to operate laboratory equipment and handle specimens.
  • Visual acuity, including color differentiation, required to perform laboratory testing and interpret results.
  • Ability to work with biological specimens and potentially infectious materials while utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Frequent use of computers, laboratory instruments, and related equipment.

Required Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent plus documented laboratory training specific to the testing preformed; or
  • Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) or related laboratory science and a minimum of two (2) years of clinical laboratory experience; or
  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related laboratory science and a minimum of one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • At least one year of experience in clinical laboratory testing to include routine chemistry, hematology, and immunoassays.
  • AMT Certification.
  • ASCP MLS (or MT) Certification.
  • Experience utilizing Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Electronic Health Records (EHR) preferred.
